Thistle

(Carduus spp.)

Folk Names: Lady’s Thistle, Thrissles

Element Association: Fire

Planetary Association: Mars + Sun

Astrological Association: Aries

Chakra Association: Solar Plexus

Energy: Masculine/Expressive

Deity: Thor, Minerva

Magical Properties: Strength, Protection, Healing, Exorcism, Hex-Breaking, Blessing, Purification.

Magical Uses: Thistle is primarily used as an herb of purification, and protection against negativity and evil, and is often used in spell work or carried to remove the bad energies of a hex. If grown in the garden or in a pot on the doorstep they are said to ward off thieves. If you grow thistles, you will also encourage strength, healing, and protection against evil and negativity.

A bowl of thistles placed in a room strengthens the spirits and renews the vitality of all within it.

Stuff hex-breaking poppets with thistle.  Also, a thistle blossom carried in the pocket guards the bearer from negativity and evil, also carrying a thistle or part of a thistle for energy and strength. Thistles are also said to guard against melancholy if carried. To call spirits put some thistles in boiling water, remove from the heat and lie or sit beside it. As the steam rises call the spirits and listen carefully, they may answer your questions. Thistles can also be used in healing spells.
